This article presents an application of a fuzzy-constrained cellular automata model to simulate the spatio-temporal processes of urban growth in the rapidly growing Gold Coast City in Southeast Queensland, Australia. Urban growth has been captured in the model as a continuous process in space and over time, which has been affected by a set of primary and secondary transition rules. The primary transition rules deal with the propensity of a local area for development and the impact of its neighbouring cells on such development, while the secondary transition rules reflect the influences of environmental and institutional factors on urban growth. Application of the model demonstrates its re-applicability to different regions and the effectiveness of the cellular automata technique in studying urban dynamics. It also provides tools to explore sustainable urban growth options under different socio-environmental and planning control factors. A sustainable urban future of the region is achievable if development is managed to maintain a balance amongst ecological conservation, economic growth and the contemporary Australian lifestyle. 1. Introduction Sustainable urban development has been of increasing interest in recent years following the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED 1987). Cities are now home to more than half of the world's population and are also becoming the battlefield for sustainable development (Curwell et al. 2005, Newton and Bai 2008). While the term sustainable development has been defined and widely accepted as development that 'meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs' (WCED 1987, p8), this general and overarching concept has been applied and expanded with …

Urban Growth Modeling using Integrated Cellular Automata and Gravitational Search Algorithm (Case Study: Shiraz City, Iran)

Cities are growing and encountering many changes over time due to population growth and migration. Identification and detection of these changes play important roles in urban management and sustainable development. Urban growth models are divided into two main categories: first cellular models which are further divided into experimental, dynamic, and integrated models and second vector models. ...

Prediction of Land use Dynamics in the Rapidly Urbanising Landscape using Land Change Modeller

Landscape transformations in the rapidly urbanizing landscape are the most dynamic process altering the local ecology, hydrology and environment. This necessitates understanding of spatial patterns of the growth for an effective urban planning. Remote sensing data acquired at regular intervals through satellite borne sensors enables the synoptic monitoring and visualization of urban growth patt...

Fuzzy inference guided cellular automata urban-growth modelling using multi-temporal satellite images

This paper presents a fuzzy inference guided cellular automata approach. Semantic or linguistic knowledge on urban development is expressed as fuzzy rules, based on which fuzzy inference is applied to determine the urban development potential for each pixel. A defuzzification process converts the development potential to the required neighborhood development level, which is taken by cellular au...

Simulation and Evaluation of Urban Development Scenarios Using Integration of Cellular Automata Model and Game Theory

Urban growth is a dynamic and evolutionary spatial and social process that relates to the changes of urban spatial units and the transformation of people’s lifestyles and consequently demographic changes. Considering the urban development process as a function of land uses interactions, population structure and the strategic behavior of the agents involved in the urban development process (the ...

Fuzzy Cellular Automata Approach for Urban Growth Modeling

This work focuses on adapting artificial intelligence techniques for urban growth modeling using multitemporal imagery. Fuzzy set theory and cellular automata are used for this purpose. Fuzzy set theory preserves the spatial continuity of the growth process through allowing a test pixel to be partially developed unlike the binary crisp system (developed/undeveloped). The development level ident...
